INSTRUMENTAL AND COMPOSITION STUDIES
A New York based musician, Nico was born in Italy, where he received very young his first musical training. During his extended sejours in London and Paris he studied classical piano with Baldwin Duerincks, graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, Harmony and Composition with Philippe Drogoz (researcher at IRCAM, national French institute for acoustics research) at Conservatoire de Montreuil, then at C.I.P. (Conservatoire International de Paris) with Pierre Lantier, Grand Prix of Rome, former pupil of Gabriel Fauré. Jazz improvisation with Pete Lemer, Ivor Marantz and Pierre Cullaz, as well as Jazz Arrangment with Derry Hall at C.I.M. (Centre d'Informations Musicales).
Along with this academic background, Nico has gained tremendous experience of the scene through years of performance with a great number of artists in diverse musical domains both as a guitarist and as a pianist. He has backed for two years, in performance and recording, french pop star Dany Brillant including many TV and radio shows.
Major achievements in his career are the realization of singer Valentina Casula’s recording of “This Is Always” (PAN Music-1120) a homage to Chet Baker, where he assumed the musical direction producing the arrangements and the scoring for strings. The record has been distributed in France, Italy and Japan, selling 5,000 copies, and the publication of his first recording as a leader (“Nico Strazzullo” PAN Music-1125) where he conjugates freely his talents of guitarist and composer. The outcoming of this record has been followed by a 1 hour live performance on FRANCE MUSIQUE, (French national radio broadcasting).
Nico is currently working on the project of the recording, which will be done in New York, of his next two albums with jazz standards and his latest compositions.
